Using AI to study without cheating

Using AI to learn is different from using it to do graded work for you. Avery is built for the first: it coaches instead of answering, and it shows you where its explanations come from. Your instructor's rules still come first.

Your instructor's policy comes first

  1. Read the AI policy in your syllabus. Policies differ by course, and even by assignment.
  2. If AI isn't allowed on graded work, don't use Avery on those problems. Use it to study: practice problems like them, review the topics, prepare for exams.
  3. If AI is allowed with disclosure, say how you used it.
  4. When in doubt, ask your instructor before you start the assignment, not after.

How Avery is built for learning

  • Hints, not answers. Avery coaches you toward an answer instead of handing it over, and its hints-only mode holds the final answer back entirely.
  • It checks your reasoning, so a wrong answer leads to the misunderstanding behind it.
  • It cites your materials. Each answer links to the passage it came from in your textbook or notes, so you can check it against what your instructor teaches.
  • Practice instead of shortcuts. Avery generates more problems like the ones you missed, and practice exams in your instructor's style.
  • No essays. Avery isn't a writing coach and isn't built to write papers.

Study habits that make it count

  1. Try the problem first, and ask for a hint only where you're stuck.
  2. When Avery gives you a hint, explain the next step back in your own words.
  3. Do a similar problem without help before you move on.
  4. Check Avery's explanation against the cited page in your book.

For instructors

Avery can work from your course: your textbook, your syllabus, your problem sets. Students can study from the material you assign, and every answer cites its source. Acumently also licenses the coaching engine to institutions and publishers, grounded in your own lessons and answer keys. Write to [email protected].
