Avery for physics

An AI study coach for college introductory physics

Avery helps you set up physics problems yourself: which equation applies, what the free-body diagram should show, whether the units and the answer make sense. It works from your textbook and checks your reasoning instead of handing you the answer.

A hint, not the answer
YouA ball is dropped from 20 m. How long until it hits the ground?
AveryWhich kinematics equation has distance, acceleration and time, but no final velocity?
Youd = ½gt², so t = √(2·20/9.8) ≈ 2.0 s.
AveryNice. Gut check: does two seconds feel right for a six-story drop?Units check: seconds
Example session. Avery asks, checks your reasoning, and points you back to the book.

Physics tools, built in

They open beside your work, and you can ask the tutor how to use any of them.

  • Free-BodyPut the forces on a body and get the net force and the acceleration.
  • VectorsAdd and resolve vectors, drawn tip to tail, with dot and cross products for a pair.
  • MotionConstant-acceleration problems: which equation to use and why, both roots shown, and graphs of x(t) and v(t).
  • UnitsUnit conversions with every step of the chain shown, and a dimension check.
  • Lab DataPaste a table to plot it and fit a line, with the slope's uncertainty.
  • GrapherPlot f(x), with tangent lines, slopes and shaded areas.
  • SymMathSolve, differentiate, integrate, take limits and series, and work with matrices, seeing each step.
  • CalcA scientific calculator in a window you can move over your work.
  • StatsMean and sample standard deviation, plus t-tests and χ² with real p-values.
  • Periodic TableEvery element: atomic mass, electron configuration and properties.

Every class also gets Avery's study tools: Review for topics due another look, Progress for what's strong and what's shaky, a day-by-day Planner, and Grade, which shows where you stand and what the final needs to be.

Works from your textbook

Upload your textbook, syllabus, lecture notes and problem sets, and Avery's answers follow the way your instructor teaches the course. No file of your book? Avery's library includes OpenStax University Physics, Volumes 1, 2 and 3, all openly licensed. For Volume 1 there's also a sample 14-week study plan and 70 practice problems written for the book.

Answers stay tied to your class. Avery cites the passage each answer came from and links to it in your materials, so you can check it against the source.

How studying works

  1. Learn the materialAvery checks the prerequisites a topic leans on and gives you a short catch-up where you're rusty, then explains the topic from your book.
  2. Work problemsStart with your assigned problems. Avery coaches, checks your work, and spots the reasoning that's tripping you up. Ask for more problems like the ones you missed.
  3. Prepare for the examTake quizzes and practice exams matched to your instructor's style, as many times as you like, with feedback on every miss. Flash cards cover the terms and formulas.

Questions

Does Avery handle calculus-based physics?

Yes. University Physics, the library's physics text, is calculus-based, and SymMath and the Grapher handle the calculus inside a problem. Upload your own course's materials and Avery works from those instead.

Will Avery just give me the answers?

Not unless you want it to. Avery's hints-only mode holds back the final answer and walks you toward it, for the times you need to be able to do the problem yourself. Either way, it checks your reasoning instead of just your result.

Does it work with my textbook?

Yes. Upload your textbook, syllabus, lecture notes and problem sets, and Avery's answers follow your class. Each answer cites the passage it came from and links to it, so you can check it against the source. If you don't have a file of your book, use one from Avery's library.

What does it cost?

Students who sign up with a .edu email by December 31, 2026 get their first month of Avery Premium free, then keep Avery Standard at no cost, with no end date set. No card needed. See pricing.

Is using Avery for homework cheating?

Avery coaches you through problems instead of doing them for you, and it cites your own course materials so you can check what it says. Your instructor's AI policy still applies: if they don't allow AI help on graded work, follow that and use Avery to study.
